What Is High Fructose Corn Syrup?

Most of us are pretty conscious about what we let our kids eat and what we won’t let them eat, but even those so-called good for our kids products may be doing more harm than good! So the next time you go shopping, take some time to read the labels of your child’s favorite breakfast cereal or juice. Chances are it’s loaded with the worse kind of sugars.

For example, high fructose corn syrup is a sugar substitute often found in many food products like breakfast cereal and juice. The sugary substitute, which comes from cornstarch, is processed into a combination of fructose and sucrose sugars.

The result is an extremely sweet product that is used in soft drinks, juice cocktails, canned fruits, frozen foods, jams, condiments, breads, cookies, candy, cakes and other desserts.

The process was developed in the early 1970’s by a Japanese researcher by the name of Dr. Y. Taskasaki. They discovered that the sugar substitute was easier to transport and store because it is a liquid. Researchers also discovered that it could be made cheaply and sold for a high profit.   

The result of that high profit is not only a waste of money; it could also be dangerous to our children’s health.

First of all, that sugar substitute in that product is most likely genetically modified, meaning scientists have altered it in some way to make it even more profitable to manufacturers.

There are also raising concerns that consuming large quantities of the sweet stuff can increase our risk of liver damage, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, anemia, and high cholesterol. It can also cause poor bowel movements, stomach cramps and bloating. Even worse, high fructose corn syrup may result in death in some people.

Still, manufacturers simply don’t care. They know that many of us don’t have the time to stop and look at every label we come across. They know that our children love sweets and are easier to persuade than adults. They know that we put our trust into products that claim to be healthy. And they know that they can easily make a profit from all of this.

Yet there is no reason we can’t eliminate many of the products containing the dangerous sweetened substitute from our lives. We are in control of what we do to our bodies. We can eat whole foods that are good for us and kick the junk foods out the door. Even if we can’t completely eliminate those foods from our lives, we can minimize them.
