Naturopathic Medicine

What Is Naturopathic Medicine?

More and more of us are turning away from over-the counter medications and more towards Mother Nature when it comes to what ails us. We’re finding that not only is Mother Nature safer than some medications, its also less expensive. Even some doctors are becoming aware of our needs by offering their approach to medicine with naturopathic.

Naturopathic medicine or naturopathy is an alternative medicine that uses natural remedies rather than synthetic drugs or dangerous surgeries on our bodies. It focuses on the use of herbs, vitamins, minerals, acupuncture, massage, meditation and anything else that is natural and less stressful to our bodies.

Naturopathy first began in Europe, but is practiced in the United States as well as other countries where it is acceptable. Several doctors began their practice in the early 1900’s thanks to a man by the name of Benedict Lust who had been taught the ways of natural medicine. He founded the first American School of Naturopathy in 1905.

By 1935 there were six states that were licensed to practice natural medicine and several more schools to educate that practice. Today there are sixteen states in the US that are allowed to practice Naturopathy legally and six naturopathy schools.

Naturopathy doctors use blood urine and sometimes hair samples to determine what type of natural treatment would be right for the patient. If a more thorough diagnosis is needed, the doctor may call upon another doctor who specializes in the area called for. He or she will also want to know more about your lifestyle, what you eat and whether or not you exercise.

One of the most common reasons a person may choose to use natural medicine is nutritional diet. Many of the problems we face today are due to our poor eating habits. We snack on foods that are filled with additives and preservatives, all the while wondering why we have diabetes, heart disease, liver disease and other illnesses.

Our nutritional diet isn’t the only reason we may choose naturopathy, however. Work and home are two of the major stress factors that we face everyday. Stress can do just as much harm to our bodies as a poor diet can. Stress symptoms may often be relieved with naturopathy.

Naturopathic medicine may even aid in minimizing further health problems. It may even aid in discovering the condition before it starts.

When we choose to partake in a healthy lifestyle, we are choosing to life out lives to the fullest, and for most of us, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
