What Are Processed Foods?

If you’re in a hurry to pick something up for a quick meal at the grocery store, what’s the first thing you grab? If you find yourself lingering towards a prepackaged food like a TV dinner because it’s easy to prepare, you could be setting yourself up for all sorts of nasty chemicals and artificial stuff.

Grocery stores aren’t the only places you can find unhealthy quick meals, however. Your favorite fast food restaurant is just as loaded with artificial stuff as those prepackaged meals.

Food processing begins when food is altered to make it last longer, easier to prepare and look more presentable to the consumer. Some examples for processing food include cutting, peeling, juicing, boiling, frying, baking, pasteurizing, canning, drying and packaging.

Some of these foods may include lunchmeats, cereals, canned foods, frozen dinners, packaged meals, bakery goods, chips, crackers, and candy.
 
Not every processed food is bad, however. There are some prepackaged conveniences such as frozen vegetables that don’t contain man-made additives.

As easy as it is to blame technology for these unhealthy convenient meals, food processing has been going on since the dawn of time. Because food would spoil quickly, man used salt to preserve many types of meat. They also used the sun and fire to dry meals for future storage.

Soon man discovered that his meal could be freeze-dried and vacuum-sealed to allow military troops and astronauts the easy of an already prepared meal. And eventually, the idea of prepackaged meals came into play.

So, what exactly makes these convenient meals so unhealthy? Most convenient meals contain trans fats, saturated fats, sugar preservatives and sodium. Plus, there are additives such as color, flavorings and other chemicals that most of us can’t even pronounce!

A good example is MSG, also known as monosodium glutamate. MSG is a flavoring that is commonly found in Asian food. Some people who consume products containing MSG may be exposed to possible side effects such as numbing, burning, chest pain, headache, nausea and increased heart rate.

However, MSG isn’t the only culprit that can cause health problems. Nearly every unhealthy additive added to those quick and convenient meals has been linked to heart disease, mental disabilities, kidney failure, obesity, diabetes and many other disease and health related problems.

Now is that a risk you’re really willing to take? If not, you may want to try eliminating many of those foods from your diet.

  1. I try not to buy processed foods in my household. And I also don’t buy into a lot of the prepackaged all natural foods. If you look on their ingredients chances are you’ll discover some sort of additive or chemical. And most that claim they are all natural, will beef up the sugar content in their product! Instead, I find myself cooking from scratch more and more. Now I must admit, I do purchase prepackaged frozen vegetables from time to time. But it’s only those that are simply just the vegetable themselves and nothing added.

    One thing I’m wondering if many readers realize, is that even though we tend to avoid processed foods when we’re grocery shopping, what about when we go out to dinner or pick up fast food? Many of these places are even worse than purchasing a processed food at our local supermarket. And you should also watch out for the local all natural Food Stores! Read your ingredients! Don’t be fooled even if it says when 100% or all natural! And don’t forget drinks! They can be just as bad for you!

    For the most part you better off cooking from scratch. That way you know exactly what’s going into your body!
